 4H CLUBS FOR YOUNG FARMERS

Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture and Land Affairs has recently started a programme of 4H clubs for young farmers that is aimed at
developing youth in agriculture in the province.

On the 06th of October at the Bisho Showgrounds the National Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ms Thoko Msane-Didiza will be the guest speaker
at the provincial launch of this 4-H youth programme.

4-H Youth clubs from all corners of the province will gather at the Showgrounds as from the 05th of October where their stalls will be
displayed to the public and the following day a formal launch gets underway.

The MEC for Agriculture in the province Mr Max Mamase who will also feature in the programme is calling upon parents and the general
farming community to come and encourage young people in this initiative.

As the late President of the ANC Comrade Oliver Tambo said, "A country that forgets its youth, will soon find itself forgotten", the MEC
warned those who do not take youth development programmes seriously especially the adults.

4H is a unique youth development programme of the Directorate of Extension Services. 4H stands for : head, heart, hands and health.

The main reason why the department has introduced 4H clubs in its programmes is to help youth gain self - esteem, and become creative and
productive citizens of the province and the entire country.

The aims of this programme are grouped into four categories, namely:

Social aims : To enable the youth to be willing to work for the good of the community as well as to learn the value of agricultural
extension.

Educational aims : In this category agricultural extension officers assist in developing good leadership skills and conflict resolution.

Recreational aims : To teach them useful and satisfying handicrafts so that they can use their time profitably.

Economic aims : To undertake farming and other related projects that will be of profit to them as well as contributing to the economy of
the province.

This programme initially started in the former Transkei and now the managers of this programme has successfully extended it to the entire
province of the Eastern Cape.

Competition in various categories of youth programmes such as vegetable gardening, poultry and public speaking as well as prize - giving
ceremony will form part of this exciting day.

In the past, agricultural extension service was mainly for adult farmers, young farmers (youth) being neglected in the process. 4H -
include youth both in - and outside school, ranging between the ages of 9 years and 35 years.

Various government departments like education are working jointly to develop this youth programme. Success of this programme vests with
youth, parents, teachers and agricultural extension officers.
